Drawing on their own production experience, they discussed opportunities such as Ibermedia, Hubert Bals, the World Cinema Fund, and CNC, addressing questions from participants and encouraging them to explore a diverse range of global calls. The session was introduced by Mariángela Restrepo, Programming and Distribution Coordinator at FUC.

    Side event 2: From Idea to Contract – How a Coproduction Is Built Location: FUC Cinema Hall, Buenos Aires Date: 8 October Description: Producers Paula Zyngierman and Agustina Llambi Campbell, moderated by María Fernanda Mugica, led an open discussion on the creative, legal, and financial process of building an international coproduction. Using concrete examples from their careers—and engaging directly with FUC students who presented their own projects—they explored the steps from early development to contractual agreements, as well as practical advice for pitching and approaching coproduction partners.

    Co-production strategies between Europe and Latin America: As part of the 26th Buenos Aires International Festival of Independent Cinema (BAFICI), the European Film Festival organised a conference titled "The Secrets of Co-Production: Learning from Experience". The event featured Lithuanian producer Emilija Sluškonytė, founder of Austrė Studio, and Argentine producer Fernanda del Nido, known for Neruda and Blondi. They discussed funding sources, the dynamics of the European market, and the challenges of international co-productions. The session attracted a large audience of emerging filmmakers and industry professionals, fostering dialogue on building sustainable networks between Europe and Latin America.

    Pitching session and workshops with European film professionals: As part of EUFF 2025, Armenia hosted a week of side events focused on short film development and professional networking. On 24 June, 40 participants attended a professional breakfast hosted by the EU Delegation, EUNIC Armenia, and Goethe-Institut Armenia, featuring a DJ set and opening remarks by EU Ambassador Vasilis Maragos and festival curator Varvara Hovhannisyan. A rendez-vous session brought together filmmakers Robert Hospyan (France) and Marat Sargsyan (Lithuania) for a discussion on short film storytelling and development. From 25 to 29 June, two workshops guided by Hospyan and Sargsyan supported 40 emerging filmmakers in developing short fiction and nonfiction projects through group and individual mentoring. On 29 June, 12 workshop participants pitched their projects to a jury. Three winners received EUR 500 each. The pitching session gathered 100 participants. The week concluded on 30 June with an award ceremony in front of 500 attendees, where certificates and prizes were handed out by the EU Ambassador.

    Side event 1: Mobile Short Film Competition Location: Dhaka Date: 7 December Description: During the European Film Festival 2025 in Dhaka and Mymensingh, a Mobile Short Film Competition engaged young creators and emerging filmmakers on the theme "In Transition – Exploring Personal, Societal, and Environmental Transformation through Film". Finalists’ works were screened on the closing day of the festival at BRAC University Auditorium, showcasing innovative short films shot on mobile devices and highlighting creative dialogue between Bangladeshi and European cinema.

    Side event 2: Masterclasses on Filmmaking Location: Dhaka Date: 6 and 7 December Description: Two masterclasses took place at the British Council as part of the festival’s professional development programme. Over two days participants attended sessions aimed at expanding their filmmaking knowledge. The first master class was conducted by Dipankar Dipon, film director, on crafting the director’s eye. The second masterclass was delivered by Masum Reza, playwright, television drama and stage play director on scriptwriting.

    Side event 3: Green Filmmaking Location: Dhaka Date: 6 December Description: ECO Filmmaking masterclass was held at the Zelaparishad VIP Conference Room in Mymensingh, focusing on sustainable and environmentally conscious practices in cinema. The festival’s masterclass series brought together film professionals and educators to enrich the skills of young Bangladeshi filmmakers and enthusiasts.     Community Screenings and Public Dialogues Location: Ouagadougou Dates: 30 October – 6 December 2025 Description: As part of the European Film Festival 2025 in Burkina Faso, seven open-air screenings were organised across strategic neighbourhoods of Ouagadougou, bringing European cinema closer to local communities. This outreach initiative aimed to decentralise access to cultural events and foster inclusion by engaging audiences beyond traditional cinema venues. Each screening was followed by public dialogues addressing themes explored in the films, including gender issues, war, and environmental challenges. These discussions created spaces for reflection and exchange, encouraging active participation from diverse audiences. The neighbourhood tour was widely appreciated, with men, women, and children from the host communities attending in significant numbers and expressing strong enthusiasm for the initiative. The festival concluded on a positive note, reinforcing its role as a platform for cultural dialogue and community engagement.

    Youth-focused film competition and collective short film project: As part of the 5th edition of the European Film Festival in Burundi, the EU Smartphone Film Competition was launched to spotlight the creativity of young Burundian filmmakers. Participants were invited to create short films using smartphones, promoting accessible, low-cost storytelling. The ten selected finalists participated in the collective production of a short film in Bujumbura from 21 May to 4 June 2025, under the artistic direction of Jean-Merci Namegabe, winner of the 2024 Smartphone Film Competition. The winner of the jury prize became co-director of the collective film and will be supported by the Institut Français du Burundi to present the work at an international short film festival.

    Film screenings and professional debates: As part of EUFF 2025 in Cabo Verde, three side events were organised to highlight local and regional cinematic voices. On 21 May, a public debate took place animated by Natasha Craveiro and Emilia Wojciechowska, both producers at Korikaxoru Films, offering a behind-the-scenes perspective on independent film production. On 22 May, filmmaker Mário Benvindo Cabral presented and discussed his film Mudjeris di Areia, addressing women's stories in Cabo Verdean society. On 23 May, director Samira Vera-Cruz introduced her film Sumara Maré, followed by a conversation with the audience around the themes and production process of the film.

    Masterclasses on women in film leadership and production: As part of the EUFF 2025, a series of masterclasses were held in Yaoundé, Douala, and Bafoussam focusing on gender equality and empowerment in cinema. In Yaoundé (10–11 March), 55 participants (64% women) explored Cinema and Female Leadership with Elise Kameni (ADAMIC), Franck Thierry Lea Malle, and Italian producer Serena Gramizzi. The training addressed gender stereotypes and international career development in film. In Douala (14–15 March), 23 participants (57% women) attended a session on Film Production and Entrepreneurship led by Françoise Ellong (online), Serena Gramizzi (online), and Franck Thierry Lea Malle (in person). The training covered project structuring, production steps, and investment readiness. In Bafoussam (17–20 March), 25 participants (76% women) took part in a workshop on Cinema and Women’s Empowerment. Trainers included Chantal Youdom, Narcisse Wandji, and Serena Gramizzi. The session culminated in the collective production of the short film Le Psychopathe, showcasing women’s resilience and practical skills gained during the training.

    Euro CineLab - short film creation and training for young Central American filmmakers: Euro CineLab is a training initiative aimed at emerging filmmakers, focusing on the production of individual short films. Participants explored both fiction and documentary formats and received professional mentoring throughout the creative process. The course was led by two independent filmmakers: • Xavier Solano, Belgian-Ecuadorian filmmaker and coordinator of MemoryLab, with experience conducting documentary workshops in Belgium, Azerbaijan, and Ecuador. • Daniel Granados, Belgian-Honduran filmmaker trained at Ritz Film School in Brussels, with award-winning fiction films on the international circuit. The programme also included two specialised masterclasses: • Editing Masterclass with Hélène Grèzes, French editor trained in Paris and experienced in documentary and music video post-production. • Audio Masterclass with Alejandro Rivas Cottle, Bolivian composer and sound engineer based in Brussels, with a track record in audiovisual production across Latin America and Europe. Participants followed a 10-session training programme covering scriptwriting, documentary and fiction techniques, editing, audio, pitching, and individual mentoring. The course concluded with the public presentation of the short films developed during the training. An international jury awarded one winning short film per country, recognising the best work from each national group.

    Youth screenings and educational Q&A sessions: In the context of the EUFF 2025, special screenings were held for young audiences in a popular district of Abidjan. Before the main feature films, a series of short films focusing on hygiene, solidarity, and peace were shown. These educational shorts were followed by interactive Q&A sessions aimed at testing the children’s comprehension and reinforcing the messages conveyed in the films.

    Screening and debate on restitution of cultural heritage: The Institut français hosted a screening of Dahomey, the acclaimed documentary by Maty Diop, who was present at the event. The screening was followed by a debate featuring Dr. Chikouna Cissé, lecturer and researcher at the Université Félix Houphouët-Boigny in Abidjan. This exchange of ideas aimed to explore society’s relationship with history, memory, and the restitution of cultural heritage. The evening concluded with an informal cocktail, allowing for further conversation among guests.

    Euro CineLab - mobile filmmaking for emerging creators: Euro CineLab is a training initiative focused on documentary and short film production, targeting audiovisual enthusiasts and self-taught creators under 30. The programme featured an 18-hour online masterclass led by filmmaker Xavier Solano on the theme of self-portrait. Fifteen participants produced one short film each, using mobile devices to explore fiction or documentary formats.

    Reinterpretation of classic European film posters: In collaboration with the San Alejandro Academy of Fine Arts, young Cuban artists reimagined posters of classic European films selected by each EU Member State. The resulting artworks were exhibited in the gallery space of one of the main cinemas hosting the European Film Festival, fostering a meaningful visual dialogue between Europe and Cuba.

    Side event 1: Cinema in the classroom for mediator training Location: Riobamba Dates: 8–9 July Description: A two-day workshop led by film-education specialist Cecilia Novoa, aimed at training schoolteachers to use cinema as a pedagogical tool in the classroom. The programme combined theoretical and practical sessions, providing participants with methodologies for film mediation and tools to integrate cinema into their teaching practice. Educational materials were distributed, and a teachers’ network was established to ensure continuity and support the implementation of newly acquired skills. The workshop also created a valuable synergy with the festival: several participating schools later attended screenings and took part in the Trazos de Cine drawing and painting competition.

    Side event 2: First drawing and painting competition “Trazos de Cine” Target group: children aged 8–12 Description: This creative competition invited young students to express, through drawing and painting, their personal experience of the films showcased during the festival. Its aim was to foster early engagement with the arts and encourage children to articulate emotions and reflections through visual expression. Each participant received two A4 sheets of paper and a box of 12 crayons, ensuring equal conditions for all contestants. Interest exceeded expectations: over 600 students from 20 schools participated. In accordance with the contest rules, each school submitted three selected artworks to compete for the first, second, and third prizes. The competition demonstrated children’s strong connection with the festival’s narratives and highlighted cinema’s transformative value as an artistic catalyst.

    3. Online short film CineLab – Sound Module Format: Online laboratory Dates: 30 August; 6 and 27 September Description: An online short-film laboratory focused on sound design and production, taught by experts Alejandro Rivas (Bolivia) and Javier Solano (Ecuador). The CineLab brought together emerging filmmakers from the Santa Elena Producers’ Collective, guiding them through the development of short-film synopses in preparation for production. However, shortly before filming was to begin, the province of Santa Elena was placed under a state of emergency due to escalating insecurity and violence. This situation made it unsafe to proceed with the planned shoots. Some participants even encountered risks during a scouting session, prompting the collective to suspend production until conditions improve. Despite these setbacks, the group remains committed to completing the short films once the state of emergency is lifted.

The competition featured a showcase of short films made on mobile devices, with winners announced during the festival programme, helping to highlight emerging talent within the Eswatini film community.

    Side event 2: Refugee day screening at Malindza reception centre A special screening and cultural event were organised at the Malindza Reception Centre to mark Refugee Day, engaging a diverse audience of refugees, asylum seekers, and community members. Approximately 320 attendees participated in the event, which used film as a platform for inclusion, expression, and community engagement within the refugee setting.

    Side event 3: Audio-Visual workshop An audio-visual workshop was held to support emerging practitioners and young creatives, with 16 officially registered participants and attendance rising to 18 during the sessions. The workshop focused on practical aspects of audiovisual production, providing hands-on training to develop technical and creative skills among local participants.

    Half-day free-of-charge masterclass led by Italian actor Alberto Paradossi: Entitled “The art of acting”, the session focused on acting in the Italian movie Zamora. It explored the emotional, physical and psychological elements that define powerful acting. Participants were guided through a journey of self-discovery and character embodiment, focusing on key techniques such as voice and movement, character development, improvisation and scene work, text analysis and emotional authenticity.

    Half-day free-of-charge masterclass led by Irish script-writer Éamon Little.: Entitled “Losing the plot”, the session focused on writing the Irish movie That they may face the rising Sun. It offered a rare opportunity to learn how a work of Irish literary brilliance was carefully reimagined for film. Participants gained insight into adapting literature for screen, capturing the Irish landscape and psyche, tone, silence and stillness, character and community and collaboration and vision.

    Half-day free-of-charge masterclass led by Portuguese actor Rúben Simões: Entitled “Entering the world of acting”, the session focused on acting in the Portuguese movie Vadio. It welcomed beginners and curious minds ready to take their first steps into the world of performance. Participants left with a basic toolkit of acting techniques, a deeper understanding of the actor’s process and the motivation to continue exploring the craft.

    Side event 1: Dutch style book reading event Location: Image Forum 3F ‘Terayama Shuji’ Date: 6 September 2025 Description: Held during the Tokyo edition of EU FILM DAYS 2025. It was an event in conjunction with the screening of a Dutch film Fox and Hare Save the Forest. The film is based on a highly popular Dutch picture book, which has also been published in Japanese translation. The event featured storytime sessions in both Japanese and Dutch (the original language). Lecturer Emi Yamamoto (Full-time Lecturer at Leiden University, Netherlands) is a member of a Dutch educational project team and co-author of the Japanese textbook for multilingual children, “Ohisama.”

    Side event 2: Live music screening of ‘The Adventures of Prince Achmed’ Location: Theatre Image Forum Screen2 Date: 28 June 2025 Description: A special screening of Lotte Reiniger's 1926 shadow puppet feature film The Adventures of Prince Achmed was presented with live electronic music by Japanese electronic musician Tentenko. This unique screening brought the century-old shadow animation to life with contemporary electronic soundscapes, creating a work resonating with the sensibilities of a new era.

    Youth-focused screenings and workshops: The 6th edition of the European Film Festival in Mauritius was dedicated to young audiences, featuring 25 short films from Europe. The screenings were organised in three age categories: Preschool (3–5 years), Elementary (6–9 years), and Middle School (10–14 years). The closing evening of the event was honoured by the presence of Kim Yip Tong, visual artist and director of Pie dan lo, and Armand Desponts, General Manager of the Mauritian branch of Gao Shan Pictures. This special session celebrated the original productions of the Réunion-based animation studio and its Mauritian subsidiary, which has been established in Moka for the past two years.     Side event: National short film competition – “Being a Nigerian Youth” Location: Abuja Submission window: 5 September – 10 November 2025 Final event: 3 December 2025 Description: As part of the European Union Film Festival Nigeria 2025, a national short film competition was launched under the theme “Being a Nigerian Youth”, inviting emerging filmmakers to reflect on the realities, aspirations, and challenges of young people in contemporary Nigeria. The competition generated an exceptional response, receiving 537 submissions from across the country, demonstrating the vibrancy and creative energy of Nigeria’s young audiovisual sector. A five-member jury evaluated the shortlisted films based on originality, storytelling quality, technical execution, and relevance to the theme. The awards ceremony took place on 3 December 2025 in Abuja, bringing together filmmakers, industry professionals, cultural stakeholders, and media. The Grand Prize was awarded to Blindspot, directed by Angel Gabriel, who received 1,500,000 in national currency in recognition of the film’s artistic merit and its powerful engagement with the competition theme.

    Cortoscopio – Short Film Competition: As part of the 20th edition of the European Film Festival Euroscopio in Venezuela, the EU Delegation organised Cortoscopio, a short film competition aimed at showcasing innovative films on gender and identity by young Venezuelan filmmakers. The competition served as a platform for emerging voices to reflect on social topics through cinema and contribute to the national conversation. In parallel with the competition, selected participants received access to a series of micro-workshops and masterclasses designed to deepen their understanding of the competition's themes and to enhance their technical filmmaking skills. These training sessions, delivered in both virtual and in-person formats, allowed flexibility for participants from various regions. Additionally, the organisers provided mentoring and follow-up support during the production phase of the short films, helping participants develop and refine their scripts. This guidance aimed to ensure high-quality outputs and to empower the young talents with tools for future projects.
